The local environment is conducive to renewable and clean energy projects. SIU is playing its role at faculty level as well as student level. SIU faculty is researching methods to sequester and process environmental carbon dioxide to slow down global warming. A team of SIU students, in 2022, reached the finals of the U.S. solar power competition. The local intelligentsia is also pro- clean energy.
The Marion council, in May 2022, approved the installation of solar-power arrays to power its water and wastewater treatment plants. The decision came in the midst of rising energy costs. The local news had previously covered a similar project undertaken by the Du Quoin City. The financial freedom was one of the primary motivations behind the approval. Nearby School Districts have also installed solar power with somewhat similar reasons of motivation. This project is a smaller version of the project undertaken by John A. Logan College in 2018.
